Atticus: Thank you. It is so nice when people from my preppy years find my blog and comment. I don't know why, but it feels like some kind of validation. I hope you will follow along and keep commenting. Corduroy, multicolor sweater, and plaid shirt: it sounds like you could have a natural talent for making creative matches.

Today I wore tan OP corduroy shorts, a purplely-blue Brooks Brothers wool sweater and multi-plaid Abercrombie and Fitch collar with black Rainbows.
But, the news is that I am disappointed that my hair just didn't seem to meet my expectation of casual decorum.

"Gray doesn't match! Maybe I should get a crew cut again? A solid color baseball cap is a temptation." In a way, I liked my clothes more than my natural adornment and at 46, I should be thankful for hair! Now, I know why there was such unrest in my soul at the end of a day wearing some of my favorite, thrift store finds. The answer will certainly be found in one of your blog entries that excises the demons of my self-esteem issues, unmet cravings, vanity or desire to rule the world.
For over one quarter of a century I've been quoting the college paper editor who wrote of "A Necessary Idealism." Baptists have been embracing their mystical side and religion has been dealt a death blow, in me at least, to give God permission to be Himself within true spirituality and outside of a theological box. Now, we'll walk a little further. Sifting through our closets of thinking I'll look forward to discovering what prisms have cast the color you wear today and why. I'll enjoy asking myself to answer your questions of soul, character and denim.

For tonight, thank you, Hastings. I need someone like you who will force persuade me to examine my silk bow tie from the inside out. Perhaps in our conversations we can wonder together about a priest's robes depicting both, humility and arrogance.

From a green Porsche 914, to your joyful smile with fashionable, squinting eyes I will look forward to reading you as you read me through fashion.

@Rhonda and @Catherine: You all touch on an idea I didn't have time to explore, which is that the way we dress can be a part of our spiritual path. I don't want to steal Catherine's thunder, because she has some great ideas on this and wants to start blogging about it herself, but I just have to say, becoming more aware of fashion has become one way I honor everything and feel closer to everything. I think people become interested in fashion for two main reasons: to call attention to themselves or to show respect for themselves and others. It's too bad that some people react to the first group by dressing like slobs. Dressing well can be an informal form of worship, an acknowledgment that God (if I may use that word) is in everyone and everything all around us.

"...I go to church only when Catherine asks me to."

Well, at least you're honest.

In addition to respect for God and His house, and one's self, I would add that it's about respect for the other members of the body of Christ. Your neighbor. I see the decline in dressing appropriately at church and other places like work as a reflection of the general decline of respect for other people. It's a reflection of what is going on in our society and culture in general. And it makes me very sad.

I've been to a church where the 35 and under crowd would show up in shorts, tank tops and flip flops during the summer. There's a place for that type attire, church is not it. If I were to show up at church dressed like that, my mother would climb out of her crypt, hunt me down and switch my behind until I couldn't sit in the pew.

It's not just about reverence for God and His place of worship. It's about having pride in and respect for yourself. How can we expect others to have respect for us when we can't be bothered to shake off the laziness once a week and show some respect for ourselves.
